A fun and stimulating 4- day workshop for those who would like to learn more about painting abstractly with oil and cold wax, in a beautiful setting by the sea (Cold Wax is a diverse medium that adds body, transparency and depth to oil paint and speeds up its drying time).
During the workshop you will aim to record the mood, atmosphere and light of the Cornish Landscape, using a variety of processes and materials. We will start by working outside (a short walk from the workshop's location) to create sketches which focus on texture, line and mark and then use these to create more developed pieces back in the studio (Participants are also invited to bring along images or a small selection of their own landscape work which can also be used as source material).
The workshop will be a deep dive into various cold wax techniques and how these can be used to create a series of atmospheric landscape paintings, full of layers, texture and depth.
During the workshop you will receive personalised support, experiment with various tools and materials, and connect with the Cornish landscape through a personal response to place.
The workshop will also cover an introduction to abstraction and how you can loosen up your approach to paint more freely and intuitively. There will be plenty of paintings demonstrations where I share more about my creative process, as well as the opportunity for some structured 1:1 mentoring during the final day.
By the end of the 4 days you will have created a series of around 15 paintings on both paper and board and will have pushed the boundaries of your own creativity.
Experience
No prior experience of oil and cold wax is needed, but some painting experience would be useful. You may have participated in one of my shorter painting workshops or online webinars (available through The St Ives School of Painting) or worked independently with the medium. If this is the case you can build on your existing knowledge with my specialist support.
I hold a full PGCE and have been teaching art for over 15 years. I have been a visiting lecturer at Falmouth University and regularly teach at Tate St Ives and The St Ives School of Painting. I also have a BA arts degree and completed my MA in fine art at Falmouth University in 2013.
Location
The workshop will take place at The Poly, which is a beautiful, historic arts venue in the heart of Falmouth, Cornwall. Falmouth is a bustling creative town shaped by its strong connection to the sea and has many fantastic independent shops, bars and restaurants.
Falmouth train station is less than a 10 min walk away and there is a public car park 5 minutes from the venue. The Poly also has a great Cafe where you can order lunch and refreshments.
