Spring Studio

I have pieces in all sizes on the go and and enjoying having variety in the scale I work with depending on my mood and energy. I find this gives me a degree of choice and stops me becoming complacent, as smaller pieces have different challenges to larger work and vice versa.

The new work is going to be exhibited at a number of different locations over the next few months and I am delighted about the prospect of these exhibits having not shown any work in the flesh over the last year.

The works have been built up using a mixture of oil, pigments, spray paint and inks and have been finished with a very thin layer of cold wax medium to protect them and give a very sublet sheen. These pieces definitely have a new energy and freshness to them and I can’t wait to share more with you soon.

For the last couple of years I’ve become increasingly interested in how my artistic practice often aligns with the flow of the seasons and I can definitely feel a new surge of inspiration and energy now that the days are getting warmer and lighter. It’s also been wonderful to witness this energy in the natural world and my garden is bursting with life, with new shoots emerging almost daily which is providing me with so much joy.

It also feels like Spring has sprung in the studio, as I’m working with a riot of bold colours and shapes, which feels both different and exciting. I think the colours I am observing in the natural world have definitely influenced my pallet, as recent works contain lots of pink, green and yellow, which definitely aren’t my usual colours. I’ve been flipping between working on canvas, paper and board, using thin layers of oil and mixed media to create translucent layers of washes.
